Holiday Gift Guide 2019: Best Gifts for Intrepid Hikers

Buying the perfect gift for someone who loves the outdoors can be a little tricky. First, there’s an overwhelming number of products to choose from with pricing that seems all over the place.

A close up of a Christmas tree with snow on the leaves and lots of decorations. Over the top of the tree are squares with different gifts in them and to the center of the frame is black text.

What if he doesn’t like this brand? What if she prefers a tighter fit over the loose fit?

If your significant other has been dropping hints over the last few weeks then we hope you’ve been paying attention.

If you’re still at a loss for what to buy them then we’ve put together some great gift ideas for the hiker or backpacker in your life.

Kilimanjaro Themed Gifts

If you or your friends are planning to climb Kilimanjaro, then the extensive gear list we’ve provided should give adequate ideas.

But for those wanting something a little more personal, and less utilitarian than moisture-wicking underpants, check these out:

Kilimanjaro T-shirt

Who doesn’t love a T-shirt? Particularly one that advertises the fact that you’ve climbed a big-ass mountain.

Kilimanjaro Classic TShirt T Shirt Premium, Tee shirt, Hoodie for Men, Women Unisex Full Size.

A nice easy gift that you can buy for yourself and wrap it for Nana to give to you. You don’t even need to get the sizing right when buying for a friend, as if it’s too big they’ll sleep in it.

If it’s too small, you’ll get a “how lovely, I can wear this once I’ve lost weight”. And they’ll never speak to you again.

This one’s got the understated “look at me, I’m wearing a mountain t-shirt, would you like to ask me whether I’ve climbed it?”

Books and DVDs

Even if you think your aunt Mabel is foolish to be planning a trip up Aconcagua, buying her a DVD or book that acknowledges her passion for dangerous activity will go a long way to preserving healthy relations.

Kilimanjaro: A Photographic Journey

I have this book, and I love it. Lots of photographs and a bit of text, capturing elegantly the beauty of the harsh and barren environment.

Kilimanjaro: A Photographic Journey to the Roof of Africa

OK – be warned, the quality of the photos is possibly not up to the standards that we have come to expect – this was published in 2009 and the person who took the pictures wasn’t an expert in photoshop.

One for the coffee-table for sure – even if just to remember your remarkable trip.

Kilimanjaro: To the Roof of Africa

A fantastic film documenting six climbers on the Lemosho route and their journey to the summit.

Kilimanjaro - To the Roof of Africa (Large Format)

Narrated by their guide and directed by David Breashears. I’ve watched this many a time and it always brings back amazing memories.

Kilimanjaro: The Trekking Guide to Africa’s Highest Mountain

Sometimes, only a “real” book will do.

Kilimanjaro - the trekking guide to Africa's highest mountain, 4th: (includes Mt Meru and guides to Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Moshi and Marangu) (Trailblazer Trekking Guides)

It’s possible to find everything online that you could conceivably want to know about climbing Kilimanjaro – but it’s nice to have a well-thumbed edition in your bookcase.

If you’re after a guide book, then I highly recommend Henry Stedman’s guide.

He’s been up and down that mountain more times than I’ve had hot dinners. He knows what he’s on about, this chap.

The Really Thin Air

Alright, I’ll admit it.

My bookcase is littered with accounts of amazing feats up Everest. Close shaves with death on Denali, and people “finding themselves” in the Himalayas. Not to mention the DVDs!

K2: Life and Death on the World’s Most Dangerous Mountain

I’ve pretty much read everything (I think) by Ed Viesturs.

K2: Life and Death on the World's Most Dangerous Mountain

He’s an amazing mountaineer as well as an excellent writer. This is a fantastic read covering the history of K2 and the major dramas on the mountain in recent years.

No Shortcuts to the Top: Climbing the World’s 14 Highest Peaks

My friend Ed Viesturs again. This book is an inspiration.

No Shortcuts to the Top: Climbing the World's 14 Highest Peaks

This man is a legend of high altitude conquests.

This book documents his quest to stand on the summit of the fourteen highest mountains in the world – without supplemental oxygen!

It’s not just a mountaineering tale, either. A lot of good lessons about life, the mountains and family.

Touching the Void: The True Story of One Man’s Miraculous Survival

This is an amazing story.

Touching the Void: The True Story of One Man's Miraculous Survival

I’m assuming that if you are reading this website then you’ve read this book, because you are already obsessed by mountains.

If you haven’t, then what are you waiting for?

Pro tip: probably best not to buy it for Mom if you are planning some high-altitude adventures next year. She’ll have a nervous breakdown.

DVD: Touching the Void

Sometimes life is just too short to read a whole book.

Touching the Void

Like, an entire one. So here’s the DVD! I love this movie, but once again, I don’t recommend buying it for Mom.

Best Gifts for Hikers and Campers – My Wishlist

Leatherman – Tread Bracelet, the Travel Friendly, Wearable Multitool

We’ve always been a little skeptical about multifunction bracelets. It seems like every outdoors company now has their own variation on paracord bracelets or multitool bracelets.

LEATHERMAN - Tread Bracelet, The Original Travel Friendly Wearable Multitool, Black (FFP)

For the most part, they just seemed a little gimmicky.

With the Tread bracelet, Leatherman have finally produced one that doesn’t only look really cool, it’s actually been built for real life situations.

The bracelet has a variety of tool heads including hex drives, screwdriver heads, bottle opener and loads more. It’s adjustable to comfortably fit any wrist and is available in plain stainless steel or with a black coating.

It’s TSA approved so you if you’re hopping on a plane before heading to the great outdoors you won’t be pulled aside. Comfortable on the wrist, it looks good enough to wear everyday.

If you’re wanting something a bit more “Bear Grylls”, check out our guide to the best multitools instead.

The Tread bracelet means you can now carry a simple knife in your pack and all the “just in case” tools on your wrist.

LifeStraw Personal Water Filter for Hiking, Camping, Travel & Emergency Preparedness

When you give someone a LifeStraw personal water filter as a gift you’re essentially giving them clean water for life.

LifeStraw Personal Water Filter for Hiking, Camping, Travel, and Emergency Preparedness

OK, we’re exaggerating, but it will filter up to 1000 liters and that’s quite a lot of water. Using iodine tablets to purify water is gross and a lot of the other water filters are just too bulky to justify putting them in your pack.

The LifeStraw weighs a paltry 2oz and measures a compact 9”x1”x1”. If you come across a stream and you prefer your water parasite and bacteria-free simply sip the water through the straw.

The high flow rate makes it easy to drink straight from the source. If you’re a trail runner or an ultralight hiker this saves you having to carry a heavy water bottle.

Just make sure there’s water along the route. The filter doesn’t need to be cleaned. After use you simply blow into the straw to backflush the leftover water from the tube. Pop the cap back on and you’re off.

Dark Energy Poseidon IP68 Waterproof Power Bank

Even when trying to get away from it all we end up bringing loads of tech with us. Your GPS, phone and camera all have batteries that are going to need recharging.

Dark Energy Poseidon IP68 Waterproof, Shockproof, Dustproof, 10,000mah, 2 USB Port, 3.4 Amp Portable Charger and Light PLUS Paracord Charging Cable, Dark Edition-Black

If your other half is prone to heading off and claiming that his or her phone has “lost charge” then this is the perfect solution.

There are plenty of power banks on the market today but few of them are built tough enough to survive the great outdoors or my propensity for being clumsy.

The Dark Energy Poseidon is built super-tough with its durability having been destruction tested to MIL-STD-810-G, whatever the heck that means, apparently it’s impressive.

Besides being shockproof it’s also dustproof and completely waterproof.

It has a power capacity of 10,000mAh which is enough to provide 4 to 6 charging cycles for your phone.

The two USB ports and micro-USB cable cover just about any device you’d need to charge.

If you drop this on the rocks or in water you can pick it up, dust it off and keep going. Just don’t try that with your phone. Trust me, it doesn’t end well.

GRDE LED Zoomable Headlamp

If you’ve ever held a torch in your mouth while rummaging through your pack then you know how much better life can be with an LED headlamp.

Headlamp, GRDE Zoomable Brightest High LED Work Headlight 3 Modes with 18650 Rechargeable Batteries Flashlight, USB Cable for Camping, Hiking, Outdoors (dark blue)

The GRDE is one of the best LED headlamps we’ve seen. The T6 LED bulb gives a brightness of up to 1800 lumens with high, dim and strobe modes and is completely waterproof.

We love how adjustable the torch is. You can have it zoom out for wide flood lighting or zoom in for narrower spot lighting. You can also adjust the angle from straight ahead to 90 degrees straight down.

This makes it ideal for night time hiking or trail running. If you don’t want to wear it on your head, the lamp can also be clipped onto your belt.

It’s powered by 18650 batteries that are included and offers 3 different recharge options including USB, car charger or wall outlet charger.

Now when that bear comes into your camp at night you’ll see him clear as day.

Victorinox Swiss Army SwissChamp XAVT Pocket Knife

That’s not a knife. This is a knife!

Victorinox 1.6795.XAVT Swiss Army Swisschamp Xavt Pocket Knife

Pulling this Victorinox Swiss Army knife out will result in gasps and instant knife-envy all round.

It has a total of 81 functions including a 2.45-inch blade, scissors, screwdrivers, a pen, LED and way too many others to mention.

It also has a built-in digital clock, altimeter, barometer and thermometer. This is such a beautifully put together multi-tool knife and is really a work of functional art that makes a great gift.

The stainless steel is rust proof and the casing is sturdy enough to survive being dropped. At 12.3 ounces it does feel a little heavy in the pocket but its usefulness far outweighs the extra weight.

Stash this in your pack and you’ll be the most prepared boyscout on the trail. It’s not the cheapest gift you’re going to give, however!

Black Diamond Trail Pro Shock Trekking Poles

A reliable pair of trekking poles makes a long hike so much more enjoyable.

Black Diamond Trail Pro Shock Trekking Pole, 68-140cm

Being able to use your upper body to reduce the stress on your legs means you’ll be able to move both further and faster with less aches and pains at the end of the day.

This pair of Black Diamond Trail Pro trekking poles have extremely comfortable dual-density grips with a 360-degree padded webbing strap that are left and right hand specific.

What makes them the best trekking poles is the patent-pending Control Shock Technology. This offers shock absorption in four different stages just below the handle to reduce hand and arm fatigue.

They store down to 26-inches and can be extended to between 27-inches and 55-inches when in use. The FlickLock Pro design makes it super easy to adjust the length and lock it in place.

These poles will make the avid hiker in your family very happy.

Spyderco Delica Lockback Knife

If you prefer your knives with more focus on the blade and less on bells and whistles then the Delica range may be more your style.

Spyderco Delica 4 Lightweight Folding Knife - Black FRN Handle with CombinationEdge, Saber Grind, VG-10 Steel Blade and Back Lock - C11PSBK

These knives look deceptively simple but they are some of the best for money. The VG-10 Flat Sabre-ground blade is 2.875” long with the overall closed length of the knife being 4.25”. The blade is crazy sharp!

The phosphor bronze washers and the opening hole on the blade make single-handed opening a cinch. The handle comes in a variety of colors and is made from Fibreglass Reinforced Nylon (FRN) with bi-directional texturing that makes it easy to grip.

Normally when you see the word “imported” you might hesitate to press the buy button.

That is until you realize that this knife is made in Japan. The country that literally wrote the book on blade and knife making, albeit in Japanese.

This lightweight, compact and high quality knife will make an excellent gift for any hiker or camper.

EnergyFlux Ellipse Rechargable Handwarmer

Cold hands, warm heart? More like, cold hands grumpy hiker.

EnergyFlux Ellipse Rechargeable Hand Warmer 5200mAh / USB Portable Charger Power Bank Battery Pack (Silver/Black)

This handwarmer truly is the gift that keeps giving. It’s basically a USB rechargeable power bank that also just happens to warm both sides of the casing up really nicely.

It has a capacity of 5,200mAh – this meaningless number ensures it will give you a few recharge cycles of your phone if you’re not using it to warm your hands.

It has two temperature settings (107F / 118F) and will keep your hands toasty for between 5 and 6.5 hours. Because both sides warm up you could press it between your two palms or alternate hands but we’d recommend just getting two of them.

With this great product you avoid the fumes that the lighter-fluid burning catalytic heaters give off, keep your hands warm and your phone charged.

On those cold mornings and evenings pop one of these into your mittens to get your fingers defrosted and the blood flowing again.

A truly warm-hearted gift this one!

FitBit Charge 3 Fitness Activity Tracker

What you can’t measure you can’t control.

Fitbit Charge 2 Heart Rate + Fitness Wristband, Black, Large (US Version), 1 Count

Fast hikers and trail runners who like to push their limits will love the Fitbit Charge 3.

The stylish slim band and OLED display look great while it continuously tracks your heart rate so you can track your calorie burn and cardio fitness level.

One glance at your wrist and you’ll know if you’re slacking off or hitting the trail hard.

The SmartTrack feature automatically records selected exercises and syncs wirelessly with the Fitbit app on your phone to track your progress.

Using the Connected GPS gives you real-time stats like distance and pace right there on your wrist.

Once you get to that viewpoint and need a break your Fitbit can guide you through a personalized breathing sessions based on your heart rate to make sure you get some Zen time in. Breathe in…..Breathe out…..

Bushnell Elite Roof Prism Binoculars

Is it a bird? Is it a plane?

Bushnell Legend Ultra HD 10x 42mm Roof Prism Binocular

If you want to be sure then you’re going to need a decent pair of binoculars. The thing with binoculars is that the really good ones can cost thousands while the cheap ones are little more than toys.

Somewhere in the middle you can find a reasonably priced pair that still works really well.

This compact 10×42 pair from Bushnell are the ideal gift for a hiker that enjoys explaining the difference between the Downy Woodpecker and the Hairy Woodpecker.

These great binoculars only measure 3.2” x 3.2” by 1.5” so they will fit easily into even a fairly small pack and only weigh 22.5oz.

The rugged rubber armored magnesium chassis has a scratch resistant powder coating and the internals are 100% dust, fog and waterproof.

The optics on these binoculars are amazing for this price and beat out plenty of competitors that cost 3 to 4 times the price.

Whether you’re checking out the route ahead or just trying to find the bird making that call this gift will add plenty of enjoyment to someone’s hike.

Stanley Adventure Stainless Steel Flask

Your camp is set up, the fire’s going and the weather is perfect.

Stanley Adventure Stainless Steel Flask 8oz Hammertone Green

Time for a sip of something special and water isn’t going to cut it. A sip of good whiskey from your Stanley Adventure flask caps off a perfect evening under the stars.

It’s made from 18/8 Stainless Steel and will add a touch of class to your outdoor kit in both hammertone green or navy. You get to choose between a 5 or 8-ounce size both of which are slim enough for easy packing.

The integrated lanyard ensures that the cap doesn’t go missing and it’s completely leak proof when the lid is screwed in place. It’s BPA free and won’t affect the taste of your tipple of choice.

Just be discreet when you take it out or you may be asked to share. This makes a great gift, in the holiday ‘spirit’.

Osprey Packs Osprey Tempest 20 Backpack

Buying a larger backpack is a very personal thing and preference in fit and comfort makes it a tough gift to buy.

Osprey Packs Tempest 20 Women's Hiking Backpack, Black, Ws/M, Small/Medium

If you want to buy her a backpack then go for a smaller daypack like this one. The Tempest 20 women’s specific fit backpack is ideal for a day on the trail or your next weekend getaway.

Osprey have updated the Airscape backpanel of this pack to make it even lighter and more breathable than the previous version.

The harness and continuous wrap hip belt do a good job of stabilizing the load with 2 convenient zip pockets on the hip belt to stash gear you want close at hand.

It has an external sleeve for your hydration bladder, an ice tool loop and LidLock helmet attachment. The bag isn’t waterproof but you can buy a rain cover for it.

This lightweight backpack is a great gift for a day trekker or climber.

CEP Men’s Dynamic Outdoor Light Merino mid-Cut Sock

The benefits of a good pair of hiking boots can quickly be undone by a mediocre pair of socks.

Men’s Crew Outdoor Light Merino Socks - CEP Mid Cut (Lava Stone) V

These, however, are some of the best lightweight hiking socks we’ve seen. Socks just don’t get more comfy than these with a perfect combination of merino wool and synthetic fibers.

The wool helps keep your feet cool while the synthetic fibers wick the moisture away from your feet.

The socks have cushioning in all the right places and a seamless toe-closure to help prevent hotspots and blisters.

Besides the excellent comfort the socks also have good compression in key spots to improve circulation and prevent swelling.

After a long day’s hike your feet and toes will still feel fresh, blister free and recharged, ready for the next day. And you, happily, won’t have to share a tent with stinky-socks-man anymore!

LED Tongth Ultra Bright Tactical Flashlight

This great torch uses the Cree XM-L U2 LED bulb (brightest in its class) to produce an extremely bright beam with a fixed wide area focus range.

LED Tactical Flashlight, Tongth Ultra Bright LED Flashlight with High Lumens, 5 Modes, Zoomable and Waterproof for Biking Camping Outdoor Emergency

With a lighting distance of up to 300 yards this a great gift for hikers who overnight on the trail.

The chassis of the flashlight is made from aircraft grade aluminum and is sealed to withstand wet weather. It’s built seriously tough with the Stainless Steel ridged “strike” bezel touted as a self defense feature.

One of the operating modes is a strobe mode which quickly disorients you if you’re on the wrong end of it.

Basically you could dazzle the bear with the strobe, bash it with the bezel, light your way as you run to safety and then use the SOS mode to signal for help.

In less intense situations the high, medium and low modes will provide excellent light for the more mundane nighttime hiking activities. It comes supplied with rechargeable 18650 batteries and a charger.

Winner Outfitters Double Camping Hammock

Sleeping on the ground is a pain in the, well, in the back.

Winner Outfitters Double Camping Hammock - Lightweight Nylon Portable Hammock, Best Parachute Double Hammock For Backpacking, Camping, Travel, Beach, Yard. 118'(L) x 78'(W), Dark Green/Green Color

This hammock is easy to set up once you make camp and comfortably fits two people. Even with both of you in it you’ll still have plenty of room to spare.

It can support up to 500 pounds so make sure you do the math before jumping in. The hammock is made from 210T parachute material which is strong, super light (2.2 pounds total) and packs down small into the supplied stuff sack.

It comes supplied with two ropes, two solid steel carabiners and two tree-friendly straps. The simple setup process takes about 3 minutes so you’ll be cuddling and snoozing in no time.

This makes a great gift for your significant other – or for that couple who are always snuggling in camp.

Motorola 23-Mile Range 22-Channel Two-Way Radio (Pair)

Telling everyone to stick together doesn’t always work.

Motorola T260 Talkabout Radio, 2 Pack

If you managed to get separated from your hiking party then having a pair of these two-way radios could be a lifesaver. If you’re really out in the wild country then it’s unlikely that you’ll have any cell phone reception.

These great radios from Motorola have a range of up to 23 miles (line of sight) and offer between 8 and 10 hours of operation.

With 22 channels and 121 privacy codes you’ll be able to select a channel that you can talk on without any interference.

It also receives 11 weather channels with real time weather update notifications from NOAA. The pair of radios comes supplied with rechargeable batteries and a charging dock.

He’ll love this gift.

Especially if his name is Roger.

Over and out.

Leatherman Wingman MultiTool, Stainless Steel

Is there any outdoors enthusiast that doesn’t already own at least one Leatherman tool?

LEATHERMAN - Wingman Multitool with Spring-Action Pliers and Scissors, Stainless Steel

If so then this will make a great gift.

The Wingman is one of our favorites because it combines the simplicity of essential tools in an solidly built stainless steel product.

The knife, pliers, wire cutter, screwdrivers, bottle opener and other tools are all easy to select and work beautifully.

We especially like this model because of it’s blade-out design, unlike some of the other Leatherman tools. This means that the blade can be opened without having to fold the tool open first.

For the price it makes an excellent gift and it comes in an attractive nylon sheath. This great multi-tool really should be the first thing you pack into your hiking or camping kit.

It’ll make the camper or hiker in your life very happy!

Garmin GPSMAP High Sensitivity GPS & GLONASS Receiver

Exploring new places and trails is for more relaxing when you’re sure that you’ll be able to find your way back.

Garmin GPSMAP 64st, TOPO U.S. 100K with High-Sensitivity GPS and GLONASS Receiver

Being able to orient with a map and a compass are essential skills but it’s so much easier with a good handheld GPS like this one.

The sunlight-readable 2.6” color display makes it easy to read the US TOPO maps it comes supplied with. The 3-axis compass and barometric altimeter combine with the high sensitivity GPS and GLONASS receivers to offer pinpoint accuracy and fast lock times.

Using the BaseCamp software you can plan your waypoints and routes before heading out. You can also pair the GPS with your smartphone to share your progress in real time with friends.

With a battery life of up to 16 hours this is an ideal gift for day hikers or trail runners.

And it’s an essential gift for that family member who is always getting lost!

Aerobie AeroPress Coffee & Espresso Maker

Can you start your day without a decent cup of camp coffee?

AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker with Bonus 350 Micro Filters (700 Total)

We can’t. Camp coffee doesn’t have to be a watery slightly brown liquid that kinda tastes like coffee. Being in the bush shouldn’t mean you have to sacrifice your morning caffeine-kick!

The Aeropress is the best way to have a proper cup of Joe while hiking. Boil your water, throw in some ground coffee and within a minute you’ve got some great espresso.

The combination of total immersion and pressure gives you a perfectly extracted cup. Cleaning it is a breeze as all it takes is a quick rinse.

The paper filters are biodegradable so just bury them before you break camp. The plunger fits into the outer cylinder so that it doesn’t take up much space.

I’d leave the funnel section at home though and just pour the grounds in carefully. Having the Aeropress in your pack ensures the best start to your day’s hike.

This makes a great gift for that grumpy-in-morning family member or friend.

BioLite Camp Stove with Internal Powerbank

This great little wood burning backpacking stove turns heat into electricity.

While the fire burns on the one side you can plug your phone or other electronic devices into the USB port to charge them while you cook dinner.

If you get a strong fire going for 20 minutes you’ll get about 60 minutes worth of talk time put back into your phone. In addition to sending power to the USB output it also powers a small fan that makes the fire start easily and burn more efficiently.

Besides the obvious cool factor of being able to charge your devices, it’s also a really good backpacking stove. Once the fire is burning full blast it’ll boil a liter of water in about 4.5 minutes. It won’t take up too much space in your pack either.

It’s about the size of a 2 liter Nalgene water bottle and only weighs about 2 pounds. With this stove you’ll basically be charging your phone with sticks. Pretty cool.

A bit gimmicky, but makes a great gift for that person that Already Has Everything!

MyFAK by My Medic: First Aid Kit for Hiking, Boat, Home

For the incessant worriers amongst us.

This is a gift that you hope never gets used but at least one person in your hiking group should be carrying one.

For the most part you’ll just be wondering if it’s worth the extra weight until that one day when you need it.

The kit includes sterile bandages, fracture and sprain care, some common medications, blister and burn care and a number of other safety essentials.

If you intend to be handling a knife, making a fire or scrambling over rough terrain then at some point you’ll probably be dipping into this kit.

There are enough supplies in this first aid kit for a group of 1 to 14 people for a period of 1 to 14 days.

Get some first aid and CPR training and this kit to be prepared for any eventuality when you’re miles away from help.

This is a practical gift that will always go down well. Us regular hikers are forever running out of something or having out of date medication in our first aid kits.

The Coldest Water Bottle Vacuum Insulated Travel Mug

This is easily one of our favorite insulated water bottles.

The Coldest Water Sports Bottle Insulated Stainless Steel Hydro Thermos, Black, 21 Ounce

If you’re headed out in some hot weather and you want your water to be as cold as when you left home then get one of these.

This BPA free bottle is made from 18/8 Stainless Steel and has a vacuum sealed double wall. It will keep water ice cold for up to 36 hours and will keep hot beverages hot for up to 13 hours.

The loop on the lid makes it easy to carry or clip onto a carabiner while the mouth is wide enough to throw in some big ice cubes.

We especially like the fact that the outside of the bottle doesn’t sweat, even with seriously cold water inside. This rugged water bottle will last you for years and will impress every time you open it to take a sip.

Makes a much more interesting gift than a boring old Nalgene bottle.

Solar Charger, ALLPOWERS 60W Foldable Solar Panel

If you know the kind of hiker that loves carrying loads of tech with them then at some point they’ll need to charge batteries.

ALLPOWERS 60W Solar Panel Foldable SunPower Solar Charger (Dual 5V USB with iSolar Technology+18V DC Output) for Laptop, Tablet, ipad, iPhone, Samsung, Acer, Asus, Dell, HP,12V Car/Boat/RV Battery

This 60W foldable solar panel provides a decent amount of power in a compact form factor. It has 5V USB ports for charging phones or GPS and also has an 18V output for charging a laptop.

Exactly why someone would have their laptop with them on a hike I’m not too sure but if the sun is out you’re going to be able to charge it.

It has eyelets that make it easy to hang on a backpack to charge devices while walking.

It only weighs 3 pounds and when folded is 12×7.5×2.6 inches. It will fit easily into a pack and makes a great gift for that hiker that can’t seem to unplug.

Hyke & Byke 2-person Backpacking Tent

This is a great lightweight double wall two-person tent.

Hyke & Byke 2 Person Backpacking Tent with Footprint - Lightweight Zion Two Man 3 Season Ultralight, Waterproof, Ultra Compact 2p Freestanding Backpack Tents for Camping and Hiking (Lime Green)

At just over 5 pounds it isn’t the lightest tent we’ve seen but the extra room inside is worth the extra weight.

If you want to carry less weight you can use it without the footprint or rainfly in summer.

For ultralight hiking you could just use the rainfly as a shelter. The tent is made from tear and abrasion resistant ripstop nylon so it’ll last for ages.

The bathtub floor, taped floor seams and two vestibule design ensure that the inside stays nice and dry even in the worst weather. We especially liked how the great ventilation means it never felt stuffy inside.

The dual doors and extra head room make this a very comfortable tent for two people. It’s super easy to set up and break down with the high quality aluminum poles and stakes fitting together in an intuitive manner.

Without breaking the bank, this makes a good entry-level tent for someone starting out backpacking or camping.

MiiR Camp Cup 12oz

Sitting around the campfire for an early morning cup of coffee is about as good as it gets.

MiiR 12oz Insulated Camp Cup for Coffee or Tea in The Office or Camping

The Miir camp cup makes that experience all the more pleasurable. The Thermo 3D double wall vacuum insulation construction keeps drinks cold or hot for ages, making it one of the best thermal mugs we’ve seen.

It’s made from 18/8 medical grade stainless steel which makes it pretty much indestructible. There’s no metal aftertaste and both the lid and cup are BPA free.

We really like the 3-inch height of this cup which makes it a lot more comfortable to use than the taller mugs.

Being able to have hot coffee in the morning and a cold beer at night makes this mug a great gift and worth the money.

Ursack MAJOR Bear Resistant Sack Bag

So you brought a bunch of delicious food on your multi-day hike and now it’s all inside a very satisfied bear. Great.

Ursack Major

If you’d rather not share your food then make sure you stash in in this bear-resistant sack bag. It’s made from super tough Spectra fabric that is designed to prevent bears ripping it open to get at your food.

It comes with an integrated cord that is six foot long and rated at a tensile strength of 2,500 pounds.

This bear bag isn’t odor proof so we’d suggest using an odor proof lining inside of it to prevent the bear smelling it in the first place.

There’s no need to hang this bag from a tree. Simply tie it to a trunk of a tree with a knot that tightens under tension. The bear will tug on it, try to rip the bag and then eventually give up.

Your food will be safe but your eggs will probably be scrambled. And at least one member of your party will be running around screaming “bear! Bear!”.

But at least you’ve still got lunch.

Sitpack 2.0 – Foldable Telescopic Sit/Stand Stool

Mother Nature offers plenty of great walking but not always the comfiest of seating options.

Sitpack 2.0 – The World’s Most Compact Foldable Seat – Portable and Adjustable Sit/Stand Stool for Travel and Outdoor Activities (Camo, Sitpack Alone)

Sitting on the floor isn’t great and having to get up and go again is pretty tough too.

When you want to take a breather this foldable portable sit / stand stool is a great way to take a load off.

When folded up it’s cylindrical with a diameter of 2.75” by 6.75” which will fit into the mesh water bottle holder of your pack. It’s a quick job to extend the telescopic leg and fold open the seat.

Using this single leg stool takes a little practice to get your balance just right but it definitely gives your legs, feet and lower back a rest.

The stool height is adjustable up to 34” tall and can accommodate up to 245 pounds. The Sitpack is made from lightweight glass fibre reinforced polycarbonate which results in a sturdy stool that only weighs 1.23 pounds.

A fun gift for walkers, sports fans and for dad when he’s got to go to the school soccer match.

MSR Quick 2 Cook & Eat System

If your camp cooking skills extend beyond roasting marshmallows on the fire then the MSR Quick 2 System will be a great addition to your kit.

MSR Quick 2 System Cook Set

In the mess kit you get a 2.5L pot, 1.5L pot, strainer lid, 2 double wall insulated mugs, 2 deep dish plates and 1 talon pot handle.

Everything fits snugly into the 2.5L pot for maximum packability with the Talon handle folding over to clamp everything tightly together.

The 2.5L pot is hard-anodized aluminum while the 1.5L pot is non-stick aluminum giving you great flexibility to cook anything you want. There’s only one pot handle and it’s tricky to swap it between pots when cooking so we’d buy an extra MSR handle.

The overall weight of the kit is 1.8 pounds and when packed into the big pot it will take up 7.7×7.7×4.8 inches in your pack.

Combine this cooking kit with the MSR Pocket Rocket camping stove and you’re basically the Barefoot Cook of the wild.

If you love hiking but hate cooking, then buy this for your hiking buddies… you’ll get gourmet food every time!
